A short abstract about the project
A glance on the history
Wallonia is the south part of Belgium, in the heart of Europe. This area has his own politic since the State regionalized politics power in 1980. Following the changement of attributions of political competence, most important geological leaders of Wallonia ; universities, CAPAS (Comité de l’Académie pour les Applications de la Science) and Geological Survey proposed to the Minister of Environment to fund a big scientific project which could respond to environmental questions that they could have in the management of the region. In 1990, the government of Walloon Region gave his agreement to this project and the convention of "The Revision of the Geological Map of Wallonia" has begun.
Organization
Now 4 teams of 2 geologists engaged by universities (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve, Université de Liège, Faculté Polytechnique de Mons) and Geological Survey are working in full time to collect new data on the field to draw geological map and to write explanation handbook. All of this work is centralized and managed by a committee (Comité de Pilotage) which is under the direction of the Direction générale des Ressources Naturelles et de l'Environment of the Ministry of Walloon Region.
The production of map is 1 per team annually, so 5 maps every year. As convention is renewed every 3 years, at the end of each convention they have to give a total of 15 maps. Belong to estimation, the project could finished in 2017.
Each geological map is edited on 1:25000 scale and covered area of 10 km on 16km. Geologist are working on map scale of 1/10.000, this causes a good precision of the map. Agreement with NGI (National Geographic Institute) permits us to use their topographic font on the geological map.
Issuing
The administration is in charge of issuing information to public. With this aim printed maps with their explanation handbooks are available with a "guide to map reading" (in French) in all of issuing center in Wallonia or at the address indicated in contact. With the fast evolution of computerizing the Walloon Region had the wish to give access to the their information via the web. So it's in this objective that the website that you are consulting was created. In the future, we wish to add much more information on the website, also it will be the tool to issue updates of maps.
